Mammography is a non-invasive procedure that helps your physician diagnose and treat various medical conditions of the breast. Digital mammography is a system in which the traditional x-ray film is replaced by detectors (much like the ones found in digital cameras) that convert the x-rays into electrical signals. The signals are used to produce images of the breast that are displayed on a computer screen for the Radiologist to interpret. From the patient’s perspective, the digital mammography procedure is essentially the same as a conventional film screen mammogram, but the resulting digital images provide far greater detail for the Radiologist to interpret.
The American Cancer Society recommends yearly screening mammograms for patients age 40 and over. The benefit of breast imaging is that it dramatically improves a physician’s ability to detect small tumors before they could otherwise be identified. With early detection, a patient’s treatment options may be greatly increased.
ACMH offers weekly scheduling for stereotactic breast biopsies.
